Manipur State Guest House
Dwarka, New Delhi

An acute shortage of accommodation for government officials, students and those travelling from Manipur to Delhi for medical purposes, led the State Government to add one more to the two existing Guest Houses in the capital city. The facility is designed as a ground plus 6 floors building with 104 guest rooms of varying sizes. Common facilities include a Gym, a Cafeteria and 3 Conference Halls, besides other facilities. 20 rooms equipped with medical facilities and a nursing room have also been included to facilitate those needing medical treatment. Two-floor underground parking areas have been built to accommodate around 100 vehicles. The Guest House is conveniently located near the airport, metro station and educational institutes.

The Facade is inspired by the pattern of the bamboo grids formed in the traditional Manipuri dance, along with the costume colours of red, green and yellow. For optimal use of the site, a T-Shaped plan has been used for ease of circulation while providing ample light to the rooms. The interrelationship between built and unbuilt is taken into consideration providing maximum visibility of surrounding green areas. ‘Kanglashas’, mythological half-lion, half-dragon creatures are placed in front of the steps leading to conference facilities. Sustainability is at the core of the design approach with maximum use of local and existing resources. Efficient use of technology has been incorporated to reduce energy and water usage. Elements such as solar panels, recycled materials, use of native plants, replenishment of groundwater, and rainwater harvesting make the Manipur guest house an eco-friendly space.
