Named after Odisha’s legendary 19th century tribal freedom fighter, the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium at Rourkela has been registered in the Guinness World Records as the Largest Fully-Seated Hockey Stadium in the world. It is also a recipient of the SKOCH Silver Award for Infrastructure.
Designed in accordance with the exacting standards of the International Hockey Federation and Hockey India, the stadium was completed in a record 15 months. Every aspect of the technical and operational compliances have been met to provide a seamless facility to host large international events such as the Hockey World Cup. Built over 35 acres, the stadium has two world-class turfs for hockey, seating capacity of more than 20,000 and a Training Centre. Designed to deliver the best match day atmosphere in the world, the Parametric design has been adapted to deliver uninterrupted sightlines from each seat. This ensures that the spectators are closer to the pitch than any other hockey stadium in the world.
The façade of the Stadium is conceived as a shimmering screen of curved metallic surface with a series of vertical solid bands and transparent screens to evoke the image of a global stadium, set in the culture of Odisha. The West Pavilion has a clear separation of the Players, Media, and VIPs on event days. It also has full accessibility with dedicated differently abled seating as per harmonized guidelines. The centrally controlled sports lighting design ensures perfect conditions for day and night games. The facility will continue to be the centre for training and development for the National team throughout the year. The Stadium is part of an Urban Park including Public Gardens, Outdoor Fields and Jogging Tracks creating a destination for the residents of the city.
