The Centre of Excellence for Disability Sports in Shillong is a visionary project spearheaded by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Meghalaya. The 22 Indoor and Outdoor Sports facility caters to the training of athletes for Paralympics by addressing their specific needs across various sports disciplines. Set to be a symbol of inclusivity, it not only provides cutting-edge training facilities but also serves as a venue for national and international events, including the 39th National Games. By promoting accessibility and integrating disability sports into the mainstream, the centre embodies the ethos of ‘sports for all’, fostering equal opportunities and empowering athletes with disabilities to compete and excel on the global stage.
Built over 50 acres, the Masterplan for this hilly terrain has been carefully developed to provide accessibility to all areas of the site with multiple points for rest and social interaction. The Shillong Centre boasts a comprehensive array of sports, living, and support facilities designed to nurture the talents and capabilities of disabled athletes from diverse backgrounds. The residential complex provides accommodation to athletes, coaches, and support staff. In addition, the Centre is also equipped with essential amenities such as Sports Science Centre, and Medical and Rehabilitation facilities, ensuring that athletes receive holistic support to reach their full potential. As part of Shillong’s Smart City initiative, green building concepts and cutting-edge technologies have been embraced to create an environmentally sustainable and accessible campus.
