Konark Heritage Area Development
Odisha

With the purpose of restoring the areas around the 13th century Konark Sun Temple to its former glory, the Gov’t of Odisha has launched the Konark Heritage Area Development Plan (KHADP). The aim is to transform the physical area to the East of the Konark Sun Temple into a grand tourist hub that echoes the grandeur of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The revitalisation plan has been developed by OBCC, we furthered the concept for detailed designing and engineering for the EPC Contractor. Development and upgradation of public realm and infrastructure in order to enhance visitor experience, while also promoting local art and culture, is at the heart of the project. Beautification of Konark Temple precinct will also strengthen the economic potential of local vendors & handicrafts.

The design characteristics and language of the project is an amalgamation of the forms derived from Kalinga and Odisha schools of Architecture. The design for the roof for instance is derived from Kanti and Potala, and the walling system from Pishta of the temples. The palette uses materials such as khondalite and dholpur stone. The Main Boulevard will connect the Multimodal Transit Hub with the Konark Heritage Area. The existing vendors will be relocated along this boulevard. The 33 acre Landscaped Plaza, a recreational space for tourists, will contain local flora and fauna and rain gardens as an extension of the existing sanctuary around the Temple. The Shuttle Lane will make a one-way loop around the site. In short, the project blends Architecture-Art-History to revitalize the Konark temple complex by implementing innovative design and restoration techniques.
